General correspondence of the Museum curatorial staff with professionals in other museums, archaeologists, historians, collectors, donors, and the general public concerning such topics as the preservation of Indian mounds, the development of the University of Wisconsin Arboretum and Aztalan State Park, the economic and social condition of Wisconsin Indians, the identification and evaluation of archaeological artifacts, and the organization of museum associations. The processed portion of this series is summarized above and dates 1908-1962. Additional accessions are described below and date 1963-2001.

The origins of the Museum at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin (WIHV85-A216) can be traced back to the 1850s, with a division-type organizational structure dating to the early 1890s. In 1978 the Museum assumed the responsibilities of the former Sites and Markers Division (WIHV89-A323).
